A communication diagram , also known as an intelligence map , mind map, or associative map, is a method of structuring concepts using graphical notation in the form of a diagram [1] .

The connection diagram is implemented in the form of a tree diagram , which depicts words, ideas, tasks or other concepts connected by branches extending from the central concept or idea. It is one of the tools for managing personal knowledge for which pencil and paper are enough [1] .

The term can be translated into Russian as “a map of thoughts”, “intelligence card”, “memory card”, “mental card”, “associative card”, “associative chart” or “thinking pattern”.

The technique was developed by psychologist Tony Buchan in the late 1960s [2] .

History of Creation and Development

Graphic methods of recording knowledge and modeling systems for centuries have been used in teaching, brainstorming , memorizing, visual thinking techniques to solve problems that arise in the process of the activities of educators, engineers, psychologists and representatives of many other specialties.

One of the earliest examples of such graphic recordings was developed by a philosopher of the 3rd century AD. e. Porfiry of Tiros , he graphically depicted the concept of categories of philosophy of Aristotle . The philosopher Raimund Lullius (1235–1315) also used a similar technique.

Semantic networks were developed in the late 50s of the 20th century to attempt to describe the process of human learning, later this theory was developed thanks to the work of Allan Collins and Ross Quillian in the early 60s. British writer Tony Busan , author of books on popular psychology, claims to be the inventor of the modern kind of connection diagrams. According to him, he was inspired by the ideas of Alfred Korzybski from the field of general semantics , popularized in science fiction novels by Robert Heinlein and Alfred van Vogt . Busan argues that the position that, based on traditional ideas about the perception of information, the reader has to look at the page from left to right and from top to bottom, is not true that in fact a person “scans” the page in its entirety and non-linearly. Busan also uses popular assumptions about the functioning of the cerebral hemispheres as evidence that link diagrams are an effective way of taking notes .

Link diagrams are used in various forms and applications, including training, education, planning, and engineering diagrams. Compared with conceptual maps , which were developed by training specialists in the 1970s, the structure of the connection diagrams retained the radial recording format, but was simplified by using only one central word.

Applications

  • training [1]
  • lecture notes [1]
  • note taking of books
  • preparation of material on a specific topic
  • creative tasks
  • brainstorming [1]
  • presentations
  • planning and development of projects of varying complexity
  • to-do lists
  • development of intellectual abilities
  • generalization and structuring of knowledge [1]
  • compilation of organograms

Strengths and weaknesses

The advantage of the method is the structuredness of information and the ease of obtaining a general idea of the knowledge embedded in the diagram [1] .

The disadvantages include limited scalability and focus on a single central concept [1] .
