There are two universities in the city: Universidade Federal de Pelotas (UFPel) and Universidade Católica de Pelotas (UCPEL) , two theaters , a public library and three museums. Near the city is the Bartolomeu de Gusmão International Airport (named after Bartolomeu de Guzmán ).
Pelotas is one of the state football centers. There are three football clubs in the city.
