Macapa ( port. Macapá ) is a city and municipality in Brazil , the capital of Amapa . A component of the South Amapa Mesoregion. It is part of the large metropolitan metropolitan area Macapa . Included in the Macap economic and statistical microregion. The population is 398,204 people in 2010 . It covers an area of 6 502.119 km² simultaneously in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The population density is 61.24 people / km². The city is located at the mouth of the Amazon River .

The city was founded as a fortress in 1688 , the official foundation date is February 4, 1758, and since 1944 it has been the capital of Amapa .
