Itajai ( port. Itajaí ) is a city and municipality in Brazil , part of the state of Santa Catarina . An integral part of the Val do do Itajai Mesoregion. It is part of the Itajai economic and statistical microregion. The municipality covers an area of 289 [1] km². It is the center of the metropolitan area of Foz do Rio Rio Itajai .

In the city of Itajai, the center of the municipality of Itajai, on the river with access to the Atlantic Ocean, the sea port of Itajai is located. The city also has the headquarters of the largest fishing port in Brazil and the largest private university in the country, the University of Vale do Itajai ( port. Vale do Itajai ).

History
In 1750, Portuguese colonists arriving from Madeira and the Azores settled in this region. In 1823, a village was formed here and on March 31, 1833 a district appeared.
The city was founded on June 15, 1860 .
Colonization of European descent in Itajai began in 1658. At the end of the nineteenth century, a large number of German immigrants and Italian immigrants arrived in the city.
In the Itajai municipality quite often there was a big flood. Significant floods were recorded in Itajai in 1880 and 1911, but the most famous floods occurred in 1983 and 1984. November 22, 2008 was the most catastrophic flood so far (covered more than ninety percent of the territory of the municipality). On September 9, 2011, the Itajai-Ashu and Itajai-Mirin rivers flooded the city, occupying seventy percent of its territory.
Geography
Itajai Municipality covers an area of 289 square kilometers, including fourteen percent of the urban area and eighty-four percent of rural areas or nature reserves. It is located on the northern coast of the mouth of the Itajai-Ashu River.

- Marejada is a celebration of Portugueseization (on the recognized date of the landing of the first Portuguese on the coast of Brazil), cooking, folklore and dancing. Marezada is held annually in October.
