Tengiz Grigorievich Sulakvelidze (born July 23, 1956 , Kutaisi ) is a Soviet football player , defender , midfielder . International Master of Sports (1980). Honored Master of Sports (1981).

Career

Club

Pupil of the children’s team of the Kutaisi club “Colchis” (first coach - Mikhail Losaberidze) and the school of the Kutaisi club “Torpedo” (coach - Carlo Khurtsidze). He began his career in the Kutaisi “Torpedo” , for which he played in the first league in 1974-1978. In 1978 he moved to Dynamo Tbilisi , which included became the champion of the USSR in 1978 , the owner of the USSR Cup 1979, the winner of the 1980/81 Cup Cup . He finished his career in 1989 in the Swedish IFC (Holmsund) .

Team

He played 49 matches for the USSR national team and scored 2 goals. Vice-champion of Europe in 1988 , bronze medalist of the 1980 Olympic Games .

Coaching

Since 1991, he worked as a trainer in Georgia at his own academy [1] . He was the chairman of the STC of the Football Federation of Georgia in 1990-1998 [2] , the head coach of the team “Young Dynamo” under the age of 14 years [3] . In 1994-1995 - the head coach of the youth team of Georgia. In 2000, he was again appointed head coach of the youth team of Georgia. Under him, the team unsuccessfully performed in the qualifying matches of the European Championship and did not renew the contract with Sulakvelidze [4] .

Personal life

Son Tengiz Sulakvelidze, Jr. is also a football player. He currently leads the father’s football academy [5] .

Interesting Facts

According to some reports, he took part in the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict [6] .
