Biography
Born in a Hasidic family, in 1916 moved to Vienna . There, Sperber joined the youth social-democratic movement Hashomer-Hatsair . He studied under Alfred Adler before breaking up with him in 1932 ; in 1926, Sperber published a monographic essay on the teacher.
In 1927, Sperber moved to Berlin , joined the Communist Party . Professor of Psychology and Sociology in Berlin ( 1928 - 1933 ). With the advent of the Nazis to power, he was deprived of the chair, imprisoned, but was soon released as an Austrian citizen. He went abroad - to Yugoslavia, and in 1934 - to Paris. In 1937 he left the ranks of the Communist Party. In 1939 he published in Paris in German the anti-totalitarian essays "An Analysis of Tyranny", "Totalitarian State".
After the occupation of Paris by German troops, he took refuge with his family in the town of Caen in the Alps , in the free zone, and in 1942 he moved the family to neutral Switzerland. In 1945 he returned to Paris , worked in a publishing house.
He was buried in the cemetery of Montparnasse .
Literary work
The famous cycle of Sperber’s novels “Like a Tear in the Ocean” ( 1949 - 1955 , publ. 1961 ), the autobiographical trilogy “All Days Lived” ( 1974 - 1977 ).
