Story

A biographical sketch about the American president Harry Truman and his political path from the "man out of nowhere" to the senator, vice president, and ultimately to the US president. The film tells about the difficult decision made by Harry Truman regarding the atomic bombing of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki , as well as the first post-war presidential election. The film covers 35 years of a politician's life.

The film begins with a story about Truman's young years. When he was 33 years old, Truman was about to marry the girl Bess Wallace, but a patriotic duty called him into the army. Truman serves in Europe during the First World War. After returning to his homeland, Truman marries Bess, they have a daughter, Margaret. The Truman open a small store, but the times of the Great Depression are coming to the USA. Truman is desperately trying to find money to cover his debts, and is happy to accept Tom Pendergast’s offer (Mayor of Kansas City ) to take the position of district judge. Truman takes his new position very seriously, does not go to compromises and “dark affairs”, and does not recognize the answer “no” at all. Further Truman's political career begins to develop rapidly. Truman leaves for Washington and runs for the Senate. Despite the fact that neither Truman nor Bess likes Washington and politicians, Truman continues to strive “up”. After the death of Roosevelt , Truman has the most difficult task: to manage a huge country at war. Difficult decisions on the bombing of Japan, the Korean War , the creation of the UN , McCarthyism and Joe McCarthy , the Cold War fall to his lot. All this time, Bess, faithful and devoted, is ready to support him in any situation.
