History
Originally the city was called Iolus, until the Moorish king Yuba II renamed it Caesarea (Caesarea), in honor of the emperor. Under the emperor Claudius , when Mauritania was converted to a Roman province, the city became a Roman colony, and that part of the province in which it was located became known as the Caesarean Mauritania .
During the Second World War, October 21-22, 1942, the Anglo-French conference for planning the operation "Torch" was held here .
