Annemarie Schimmel ( German: Annemarie Schimmel , April 7, 1922 , Erfurt - January 26, 2003 , Bonn ) - German religious scholar , Arabist and Iranianist , a major scholar of Islamic mysticism , translator of oriental poetry.

Biography
From the age of 15 she took Arabic lessons. In 1939, she entered the Friedrich Wilhelm University of Berlin . Since 1946 - professor of Arabic studies and Islamic studies at the University of Marburg . She defended her doctoral dissertation on the history of religions in 1954 . Since 1954 - professor of the history of religions at the University of Ankara , spent five years in it. In 1967 - 1992 - at Harvard University. She also taught in Tehran , London , Edinburgh . Honorary Professor of the University of Bonn .
Scientific and translation activities
He is the author of more than 100 books on Islam and translations of Arabic, Urdu, Hindi, Persian, Turkish poetry ( Rumi , Halladzh , Iqbal , etc.) into English and German.
Recognition
Winner of many awards, including the Peace Prize of German Booksellers ( 1995 ) and the Pakistani State Order of Sitara-i-Imtiyaz . The works of A. Schimmel are widely recognized in the countries of the East.
