Story

1873 year . U.S. In Ohio , Pike County , a local newspaper reporter finds a poor Negro family of elderly Madison and Mary Hemings. The reporter is interested in the story of their possible long-standing relationship with former third US President Thomas Jefferson . Madison Hemings recalls his mother, a former slave of Thomas Jefferson, trying to restore events almost a hundred years ago for the reporter ...

1785 year . The future third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, first finds himself abroad, as the US ambassador to France , at the sunset of Louis XVI , just before the start of the French Revolution . Despite his rigorous convictions, Jefferson is successful in the depraved Parisian high society.

A beautiful artist and musician of Anglo-Italian descent, Maria Cosway , traveling with her husband in France, captivates Jefferson, whose wife recently died. However, out of respect for the daughters and the memory of his wife, he, not outwardly, but in his soul, rejects Mary in love with him. Feeling this, she leaves Jefferson, but continues to correspond with him.

Jefferson’s next hobby in Paris is his own young quarter - slave Sally Hemings - the governess of his youngest daughter sent from America and the half-sister of his recently deceased wife.

1789 year . The newly elected first president of the United States, George Washington, offers Jefferson the post of Secretary of State , and he is about to return to America, but his slave James Hemings, Sally's brother, wants to stay in France, whose laws do not recognize slavery . To persuade James to return, the future secretary of state promises to give freedom to James and his sister Sally, who is already pregnant with her first child from Thomas Jefferson.
