The brutal murder of a young guy. The honest and principled commissar Verge ( Lino Ventura ) does not want to turn a blind eye to the unclean means of the election campaign of the politician Lardatta ( Victor Lanu ), whose assistant and committed the crime. It comes to the dismissal of the commissioner ... with promotion, but not in Rouen , but in Montpellier , where he should leave in the near future.
Vergea, wanting to bring the Lardatta gang to the clear, together with his assistant Lefebvre ( Patrick Devaer ), arranges a "performance", as a result of which an investigation is launched against them for corruption, and for this reason he remains in Rouen. The ring around the criminal is tightening ... the cornered killer is taking Lardatt, who betrayed him, as a hostage, but Verge ... is in a hurry to take up his new position.
