The attack on Omdurman and Khartoum - a military operation in the cities of Omdurman and Khartoum , carried out by the Justice and Equality Movement - by the rebel group of the Darfur region against the Government of Sudan from 10 to 11 May 2008 .

According to Sudanese government sources, the clashes took place only on May 10, 2008 , but JEM representatives reported continuing heavy fighting in the Khartoum area until May 11 [5] .
For the first time since the beginning of the armed conflict in the western regions of Sudan, clashes reached the environs of the capital [6] .

Events
On May 10, 2008, in the city of Omdurman, near Khartoum , in the area of ββthe barracks and the air force base, clashes between the Sudanese government forces and Darfur rebels began. According to eyewitnesses, heavy fighting took place in the city of Omdurman and some areas of the Sudanese capital, army trucks were taken to the streets, helicopters were used.
As a result of the battle, government forces regained control over the strategic base of the Wadi Sayedn Air Force and defeated the rebels.
On the evening of May 10, Sudanese television announced the complete defeat of the militants and the murder of the head of the attack, Mohamed Saleh Garbo, and the commander of the rebel intelligence service Mohamed Nur al-Din .
However, the JEM representatives stated that the fighting continues in Omdurman and the northern part of Khartoum. According to them, the purpose of the attack is the overthrow of Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir.
A spokesman for the Sudanese government, Mustafa Osman Ismail, said that after this attack, no negotiations with the JEM fighters are possible.
Reaction
Severance of diplomatic relations with chad
Sudan has accused neighboring Chad of training and dressing the rebels, and of the fact that the rebels are infiltrating the Darfur region from Chad. Chad denied these accusations, despite this Sudan broke off diplomatic relations with Chad, which were restored 2 months before these events, in mid-March 2008.
