Story
Tony ( James Fox ), a wealthy young Briton, hires Hugo Barrett ( Dirk Bogard ) as a servant. At first, Barrett easily takes up a new job, and he and Tony have a good relationship that matches their social roles. However, this relationship begins to change with the advent of Susan (Wendy Craig), the girl Tony, who is suspicious and hostile to Barrett. Barrett, in turn, brings a maid, Vera ( Sarah Miles ), into the house, introducing her to her sister, but it soon becomes clear that she is his mistress. As a result of intrigue and manipulation, Barrett and Vera change roles with Tony and Susan: Tony becomes more and more absent-minded and dependent on Barrett, and Susan is driven out of the house.
