Biography
A pupil of Richard Hall , Willem Petrie, and Samuel de Lange Jr. , Wagenaire also took lessons from Heinrich von Herzogenberg in Berlin. In 1888, he replaced his teacher Hola as organist at the Utrecht Cathedral, then began teaching at the local music school (the future Utrecht Conservatory ), in 1904 he headed it; in 1916 he became an honorary doctor of the University of Utrecht . In 1919 - 1937, Wagenar led the Hague Conservatory . Among the students of Wagenar, in addition to his son, were Peter Anroy , Willem Peiper and other prominent Dutch musicians.
In the composer's work of Wagenar they reflected the influence of Hector Berlioz and Richard Strauss . He owns the opera The Merchant of Venice ( n. De koopman van Venetië ; according to Shakespeare's comedy), a number of symphonic overtures (Cyrano de Bergerac, op. 23, 1905 ; The Taming of the Shrew, op. 25, 1909 ; Amphitryon. , op. 45, 1938 ), symphonic poems (Saul and David, op. 24, 1906 ), Sinfonietta, vocal and symphonic music, organ and choral music.
Memory
In 1961 , a street ( niderl. Wagenaarlaan ) was named after Wagenar in the Rotterdam district of Moenlaankvartir [3] .
