Villa Efrussi de Rothschild

Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild ( fr. Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild ) - villa of the Efrussi family, built on the cape of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat of the Cote d'Azur, Baroness Beatrice Rothschild in 1905 - 1912 .

In 1905, Beatrice, after the death of her father, acquires 7 hectares of land at Cape Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and proceeds to the construction of the villa of her dreams. Construction lasted 7 years, during the construction of Beatrice was replaced by about 20 architects. In 1912, Villa Efrussi de Rothschild, called Beatrice Ile de France ( French Ile de France - "French island") received its first guests. Known for her love of collecting, she decorated the villa with genuine works of art from the 15th to 18th centuries .

After the death of Beatrice in 1934, the villa and all the objects of art collected by her, which were in her various French names, were transferred by will of the owner of the French Academy of Fine Arts. The villa is currently a museum and is open to the public.

Patio

The lobby of the villa is decorated in the form of a patio surrounded by a gallery of pink marble . The lobby contains a collection of medieval and Renaissance art objects (the most significant objects are the altar image of the Valencian school (end of the 15th century ) with Saint Brigitte , Antoine the Hermit and Saint Roche and a picture of Carpaccio (beginning of the 16th century ) depicting a condottier ).

Along the perimeter of the hall there are doors to the following rooms:

  • Louis XV Salon - the windows open onto the esplanade of the French Garden, the salon is decorated with armchairs of the Louis XV era, tapestries on the theme of the adventures of Don Quixote and Pellegrini 's canvas "Phaeton";
  • Louis XVI salon - two carpets adorn the floor: from the Royal Chapel of Versailles and the 87th carpet from a series of 104 carpets commissioned by Louis XVI for the Grand Gallery of the Louvre ;
 
Beatrice de Rothschild Apartments
  • Beatrice de Rothschild’s apartments are decorated with, among other things, the secretary of Marie Antoinette , French costumes of the 18th century are displayed in the dressing room, in which the hostess of the villa loved to meet her guests;
  • porcelain salon - one of the largest collections of works by Sevres and Vincennes porcelain manufactories is presented, a vase belonging to the Marquise de Pompadour is exhibited;
  • Tea Salon - Located on the terrace overlooking the Sevres Garden.

On the second floor of the villa there are salons of Saxon porcelain , tapestries , "monkeys" (with a porcelain monkey orchestra), Chinese; bedrooms decorated in the style of the era of Louis XVI and the Directory , reception and salon Fragonard (exhibited watercolors by the artist).

The villa is surrounded by gardens, with a total area of ​​about 4 hectares. The gardens of the villa are called:

  • "Florentine garden" - an avenue of cypresses goes to Villefranche Bay, and on the other hand ends with a horseshoe-shaped staircase in which the grotto is located;
 
Stone garden

  • "Provencal garden" - olives , pine , lavender , typical for Provence , grow;
  • "French Garden" - the largest garden of the villa, consists of a central reservoir with a fountain and side ponds; above the park rises the pavilion "Temple of Love", a copy available at Versailles ;
  • “Sversky Garden” - located next to the tea room, includes a terrace overlooking Villefranche Bay;
  • rose garden - rose varieties are named for Beatrice Rothschild and Princess of Monaco Grace Kelly .
