“ Three Faces of Fear ” ( Italian: I Tre Volti della Paura ) - the horror almanac of Italian director Mario Bava . The film premiered on August 17, 1963. Like other movie almanacs of the sixties, the film consists of three parts with an independent plot: “Phone”, “Ghoul”, “Drops of water”. Each of them, as stated in the credits, is based on a classic piece: the first is the story of A.P. Chekhov , the second is the story of A.K. Tolstoy " The Ghoul 's Family " (1839), and the third is the novel by Guy de Maupassant . At the same time, only the episode "Ghoul" can be called an adaptation, while the rest have nothing to do with the work of Chekhov or Maupassant.

Story
The framing is used in the almanac: Boris Karloff , who played in the second part of the ghoul, pronounces the opening speech before each episode. The final is decided in a humorous way: Boris Karloff, who is riding a horse, informs the viewer that the horrors are over. After that, the camera pulls back and it becomes clear that instead of a real horse a dummy has been used, and in the role of a forest there are branches with which people run in circles.
Episode One - The Phone
Rosie is disturbed by phone calls, the voice of a stranger in the receiver says that she will die soon. Rosie is convinced that the unknown person somehow sees and controls all her actions and phone calls, so that she can not even call the police. Frightened, Rosie invites her friend Mary to stay with her night. A stranger's voice tells Rosie that he is her former lover, who, not without her participation, ended up in jail, recently escaped from prison and now wants to take revenge on her. Rosie's former lover comes to her house at night, first strangles Mary, and then attacks Rosie. Defending herself, she kills him with a knife.
Episode Two - The Ghoul
A young nobleman Vladimir, while riding a horse, discovers a decapitated corpse of a man. In the nearest settlement (inn) he asks to spend the night, however, he notes that the villagers are in an incomprehensible excitement. They are waiting for the old man who went to kill the robber Alibek, however, according to him, if he does not return within five days, this will mean that he has turned into a ghoul . Soon Vladimir falls in love with a young girl named Zdenka. When the fifth day has arrived since the departure of the old man, he returns, carrying the head of the murdered robber in his hands. But the old man himself became a ghoul - he kills his whole family. Vladimir and Zdenka fled, but the old man found their refuge and killed Zdenka. Having become a ghoul, she stuck her fangs into the neck of Vladimir.
Episode Three - “Water Drops”
The nurse Helen, who is caring for the corpses , was called to the house of the deceased woman Miss Perkins. In an empty house there are cats who, with their snorts, show dissatisfaction with the stranger who has appeared. While dressing the deceased, Helen notices a ring on her finger that she decided to take for herself. Returning home and putting on the ring of the deceased, Helen is frightened by the sounds of falling drops, in her apartment there are electricity failures, someone's moans and voices are heard. In the darkness, Helen lights a candle and opens one of the doors, behind which she sees the ghost of the dead Miss Perkins. This is followed by a cry of horror, and in the morning the police find the corpse of a nurse with a ragged blue finger on which a ring was put on.
