Skilak of Carian ( other Greek Σκύλαξ ὁ Καρυανδεύς ; VI century BC) - Greek navigator and geographer.

Born in Cariand in Caria in southwest Asia Minor . On behalf of Darius I in 519-516 BC. e. traveled along the Indus River and along the Persian Gulf coast , leaving the city of Caspatir on the Kabul River in Gandahar . His writings that did not reach us were used by Hekatey and Herodotus .
Pseudo-Skylak
Attributed to Skilak “The peripl of the inhabited sea of Europe, Asia and Libya, and how many and what peoples in each; then also areas and bays and rivers; and what is the length of the voyages; and seven inhabited islands, and which continent each lies with ”was compiled, according to some assumptions, in 338–335, and according to others - in 356 BC. e.
It covers the Inland (Mediterranean) Sea, Propontida, Pont and Meotida (Marmara, Black and Azov Seas), and also extends beyond the limits of the Heracles Pillars ( Gibraltar ) along the coast of the Outer Sea (Atlantic Ocean).
The work is known as “The Pseudo-Skilak Peripl”, since it is believed that its anonymous author took on the name of an outstanding traveler.
Sources of the Pseudo-Skilak: Ionian geographers Hekatey of Miletus and, possibly, partly Skilak himself, the Carthaginians Gannon and Himilkon , Greek geographers of the 6th-5th centuries. Antiochus of Syracuse and, probably, Sirloin (Athenian geographer of the 4th century BC) [1] , Efor, Theopompus and Eudoxus.
