Introduction
| Many of the greatest human achievements have been driven by the need for love and recognition. What happens when this need for recognition turns into a desire to be revered, or even ... to crave to be worshiped as a god? |
Story
Simon Kress is working on a research project on Martian life. However, his project is curtailed - due to the fact that one of the Martian samples almost got into the environment, and as a result, Kress is left without work.
Disagreeing with this decision, the scientist secretly carries sand to his home with the larvae of Martian organisms. In his barn, he creates something like an incubator , on which he reproduces Martian conditions, and he manages to grow a colony of termite - like creatures.
Soon, Kress discovers that Martian termites have a peculiar mind. So, they sculpt figures resembling his face out of sand. Cress begins to believe that Martian organisms worship him as God. At some point, he loses his vigilance and finds himself bitten by Martian termite, which causes him a progressive infection of the blood. As a result, the colony gets out of its control, and the alien life form, despite the resistance of Kress, dying in an unequal struggle with alien organisms, breaks into the biosphere of the Earth.
Final word
