The Omega Man is an American science fiction post-apocalyptic 1971 film directed by Boris Sagal. A screen version of Richard Matheson ’s novel “ I Am A Legend ”. The film premiered on August 1, 1971.

Story
The action takes place in Los Angeles in 1977, 2 years after the bacteriological war between the Soviet Union and China . As a result of the war, a disease caused by bacteria spread throughout the planet and claimed the lives of most of the world's population. The only survivor in the city is a military doctor, US Army Colonel Robert Neville, who lives in the center in a fortified house and is immune to the disease as a result of the vaccine.
In addition to Neville, other people, affected by the disease, and completely changed mentally under its influence, live in the city. They became albinos suffering from photophobia , fanatical sectarians prone to cruelty, forming their own community and calling themselves “Family”. The Family Leader is Jonathan Matthias, a former well-known television news anchor. Family members believe that war and bio-infection occurred through the fault of science, and therefore adheres to Luddite views.
All this time, Dr. Neville has been driving around the city, looking for hidden members of the Family and killing them, simultaneously replenishing his supplies, and at night he fights off Family attacks and conducts experiments to obtain a vaccine for the disease. Having set a trap for Robert Naville, the Family captures it. A small group of people rescues the doctor from execution, which, being infected, has an increased resistance to the disease. Their situation is unstable, since they still run the risk of getting sick. Neville helps these people by creating a vaccine and curing one of them, a guy named Richie.
Richie goes to the Family to tell them the news about the vaccine and the possibility of salvation. But the sectarians kill him and begin the hunt for Neville. Meanwhile, Lisa, sister of Richie, has a relapse of the disease, and she joins the Family. The family, along with Matthias and Lisa, infiltrate Neville's house and capture the doctor. Neville, taking Lisa and the vaccine, escapes, seriously injured. The dying doctor passes the vaccine and the girl to the remaining members of the uninfected group who are leaving the city. Perhaps humanity still has a chance of salvation.
