Story

Young and talented budding scientist Quin Melori, working in his basement to create an anti-gravity machine , invents a device that creates the so-called Einstein – Rosen – Podolsky bridge [2] , which is essentially a wormhole - a tunnel connecting two parallel worlds . After the traveler passes through such a tunnel, he finds himself in an alternative reality , which can radically differ from ours. At the same time, traveling through the tunnel, the traveler does not know which of the countless variations of parallel universes he will find himself in. The device has a timer that counts down the time. After the timer expires, the traveler returns to his reality. The transition process through the tunnel was called "gliding" (hence the name of the series).

Together with physics teacher Maximilian Arturo and electronics sales assistant Wade Wales, Quinn decides to embark on a journey into a different reality by setting a timer for 5 hours. In order for the tunnel to withstand the movement of several people, Queen increases the power of the device, which leads to the fact that singer Rembrandt Brown accidentally gets into the wormhole. Once on the other side, travelers discover a world in which eternal winter reigns - perhaps due to a shift in the axis of rotation of the planet. Heroes are in danger of dying from a tornado, however, another 4 hours are left before moving. Heroes decide to reset the timer. This allows them to move ahead of time, however, it erases the coordinates of their native land, and they fall into the next parallel universe, so the heroes can no longer return to their reality. All that remains for them is to slide on, hoping that the next tunnel will bring them home. In several series, they get there, but for various reasons continue their journey.

His teacher Maximilian Arturo and girlfriend Wade Wales came to visit Queen Malory . He demonstrated to them his invention, which made it possible to open "doors" in the form of funnels to other worlds. When activating an energy funnel using a timer, they sucked inward. Since the voltage of the funnel was set too high, it increased in size, began to move, and, flying out through the wall, sucked on soul singer Rembrandt Brown , who was driving near the house where the experiment took place ...

Once in the next world, Maggie and Rembrandt discovered that a stranger had moved with them, who also called Queen Mallory (later they called him Mallory ). And the “real” Quinn and his brother Colin were gone. It turns out that in this world a certain crazy physicist Oberon Geiger organized experiments with a space-time funnel. And so it happened that the sliders and the Geiger subject fell into the same funnel. As a result of the overload, Colin disappeared forever, and Queen's “subatomic structure” intertwined with the structure of test Quinn Mallory from this world. As a result, the “new Queen” completely suppressed the structure of the “old Queen”. From old Queen, only a few thoughts remained in the head of the new Queen, which eventually disappeared forever. The sliders take with them the new Queen in the hope of getting into the worlds, where there will be the necessary equipment and technologies that can “divide” the Queens. Diana Davis , Geiger’s assistant, feeling responsible for what happened, volunteers to help the moving ones, and follows with them.

Genre Changes

From one season to another, the nature of the series has changed dramatically. There were several reasons for this.

The first three seasons were released by the Fox Entertainment Group and first aired on FOX Network from March 22, 1995 to May 16, 1997 . The fourth and fifth seasons were produced and broadcast by SciFi from June 8, 1998 to February 4, 2000 .

In addition, such a heterogeneity of the series is due to the fact that the creators, in particular Tracy Torme, constantly experienced friction with the FOX Network since the first season.

In particular, the first season was shown by the FOX Network not in the order conceived by the author, but in an alternative order of the series, however, based on the fact that, according to the intention of Tracey Torm, the show was originally conceived as a connected plot flowing from series to series, the initial chronology is easily traced according to elements of clothing and plot circumstances. However, in the future, the FOX Network concept, according to which each series is a complete narration, prevailed.

The continuation of the series was not planned after the end of the first season, but the protests of the fans convinced the management of FOX Network to air the second season. However, while they began to insist on introducing a larger action element into the series and removing political satire. The result of this was the appearance in the second season in the Invasion series of the warlike Kromag race.

The series was originally designed strictly in the genre of adventure and science fiction , but in the second season the Obsession series in the genre of paranormal fiction or mysticism was shot.

The third season caused a big wave of criticism from fans of the series due to the fact that the genre orientation of the series was very heterogeneous and sharply differed in theme. As a result, the positioning of the series became impossible, and as a result, the expectations of one part of the audience were not justified in some series, and the expectations of another part of the audience in others. In particular, the series of the mystical genre of “The Lord of Dreams” (Eng. The Dream Masters), “Desert Storm” (Eng. Desert Storm), “Dragon's Lair” (Eng. Dragonslide) were met with satisfaction by lovers of paranormal phenomena, but they were extremely contrary to to the genre of the series “Deception” (English Double Cross), “Acid test of electric tornado” (English Electric Twister Acid Test), “Work of art” (English State of the ART) and the like, sustained in the science fiction genre and close the original idea of the show. In addition, starting with the “Rules of the Game” series, episodes with pure action appeared , and the series took on the character of a fantastic action movie .

As a result of the conflict with the FOX Network, which was caused, among other things, by such a sharp change in style, the actor left the series John Rhys-Davis , which was framed by the death of his character Professor Maximilian Arturo in the middle of the third season (17th episode). As a replacement, the team was joined by the character of Carey Wührer - Maggie Becket, and after that the show takes on the character of pure action .

The result was such a sharp drop in ratings that the FOX Network closed the show.

After the show closed, the rights to it were redeemed by the SciFi channel, and Tracy Torme was not opposed to regain creative control of the show and its original spirit, but he did not have a relationship with David Pekinpa and at the end of the fourth season he left.

The fourth season was sustained in a single theme and style of a fantastic action movie with elements of an alternative history and alternative social norms. The scientific and adventure component was extremely simplified and eliminated, and the whole plot was finally focused on the war with another race - cromagi. More thrash appears on the show.

The fifth season, released after the final departure of Tracy Torme from the author's team and the replacement of his functions by David Pekinpa, is a pure thrash action .

As a result, the show was closed, and did not receive a logical ending, due to the loss of interest in the audience with an immediate cessation of funding.
