Elbe Castles

The Elbe Castles ( German Elbschlösser ) are three well-known castles located on an elevation on the right bank of the Elbe in Dresden in the Loschwitz district, about three kilometers from the city center: Albrechtsberg , Lingner and Ekberg ( German Schloss Eckberg ).

Contrary to the name, “castles” never served as defensive structures and were built in the middle of the 19th century. They are adjacent to the English-style parks and terraces, descending to the Elbe and partially used for vineyards . The design and construction of the castles was led by Prussian architect Adolf Lose and Christian Arnold , a student of Gottfried Semper . Two castles, Albrechtsberg and Lingner, were built by order of the Prussian prince Albrecht . For this reason, sometimes they are also called “Albrecht locks”. Over the past hundred years, owners of castles and the way they are used have changed many times. In recent years, they have been used as hotels, restaurants, exhibition centers. In 2007-2009, the Lingner Castle housed the UNESCO Bureau, which worked on the World Heritage project. Castle parks are always open for free visits and are a favorite vacation spot for both residents of Dresden and tourists.
