Biography
John Hurt was born on January 22, 1940 in the English city of Chesterfield in the family of Arnold Herbert Hurt (1904-1999) and Phyllis Massey (1907-1975). His father, a mathematician by training, was the vicar of the Church of England in the small town of Shairbrook in the northeast of Derbyshire , and when he was five years old, he became vicar of the church of St. Stephen in Woodville . Mother was an engineer and aspiring actress [8] [9] [10] . Hurt also had an older brother, Michael, who became a monk with the name Anselm and settled in Glenstal Catholic Abbey , and his adopted sister Monica.
John began his acting career in the theater. He attracted the attention of Hollywood in 1966, playing in the Oscar-winning drama " Man for All Times ." After that, the actor for a long time successfully worked on television.
Hurt was twice nominated for an Academy Award for Max's role in the movie Midnight Express (1978, Golden Globe and BAFTA ) and for John Merrick in Lynch 's Elephant Man (1980, BAFTA ).
The public Hurt is also known for supporting roles in the films Alien (1979), Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001), Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (2010 ) In the high-budget [11] adaptation of the 1984 dystopian dystopia , John played the role of Winston Smith .

Personal life
He was married four times, and his last wife was producer Anven Rhys-Myers. From the third marriage to actress Joan Dalton, Hurt had two sons left: Alexander and Nicholas.
Health Concerns and Death
On June 16, 2015, it was announced that Hurt was diagnosed with early stage pancreatic cancer . The actor said that he would continue to work while undergoing treatment and that he and his doctors were “more than optimistic about a successful outcome” [13] . On October 12, it became known that the treatment was successful and John Hurt defeated the disease [14] .
John Hurt died on January 25, 2017 at his home in Cromer, Norfolk , three days after he turned 77 years old. [15] A public statement about the death of the actor was postponed until January 28 [16] .
