Biography

Boris Pavlovich Ostashchenko-Kudryavtsev was born in St. Petersburg in the family of an architect.

In 1893, Ostashchenko-Kudryavtsev first attended a meeting of the Russian Astronomical Society , after which he began to regularly attend all meetings of the society .

In the spring of 1894 he graduated from the Third St. Petersburg Classical Gymnasium and passed the final exams for the certificate of maturity, received a gold medal.

In the fall semester of 1894, Ostashchenko-Kudryavtsev was enrolled in the first year of physics and mathematics department of St. Petersburg University .

In the summer of 1896 , under the patronage of Professor A. M. Zhdanov , he was sent by the Russian Geographical Society to a scientific expedition to study the Kursk magnetic anomaly as a researcher and secretary.

In 1898 he graduated from St. Petersburg University with a diploma of I degree. Immediately after graduation , Ostashchenko-Kudryavtsev was accepted for permanent work at the Pulkovo Observatory as a full-time “supernumerary” (that is, junior) astronomer.

In 1899, he performed magnetic and astronomical observations on the icebreaker Ermak while sailing in the polar seas.

In 1900, he took part in degree measurements on the island of Svalbard .

From February 1901 to April 1902 he worked in the Odessa branch of the Pulkovo Observatory .

In 1909, the Russian Maritime Department transferred the Nikolaev Observatory under the control of Pulkovo . Ostashchenko-Kudryavtsev was sent to Nikolaev for its re-equipment and reprofiling. Until 1913, he served as the Sea Astronomer of the Black Sea Fleet .

In 1913, as a result of a closed ballot, the Academy of Sciences unanimously elected Ostashchenko-Kudryavtsev as the senior astronomer (that is, an ordinary professor) at the Pulkovo Observatory .

In the fall of 1917, he was engaged in the creation of the Nikolaev National Workers University, in which he subsequently held the posts of dean and deputy rector. In 1918, Ostashchenko-Kudryavtsev was elected rector of Nikolaev Sailor University. In 1919, on his initiative at the Nikolaev Gubnarobraz, in which he headed the corresponding section at the Out-of-School Department, a series of adult schools was organized. In the same year Ostashchenko-Kudryavtsev was appointed the chairman of the commission on protection of monuments of art and antiquity, heading the Nikolaev society of national universities.

From 1919 to 1923, Ostashchenko-Kudryavtsev was a professor at the Nikolaev Institute of Public Education , in which he read a whole range of astronomical disciplines.

In 1922 he moved to Kharkov . For several years, Ostashchenko-Kudryavtsev taught a course of cartography at the geographical faculty of the Kharkov Pedagogical Institute , where, on the instructions of the People's Commissariat for Education, he headed the State Examination Commission.

In February 1923, he was approved as a full member of the research department of astronomy of the Kharkov INO .

From 1924 to 1929 he worked as a consultant and specialist in the newly created Ukrainian Geodesic Department.

In 1940 he headed the astronomical department of the Kharkov Observatory .

From 1930 to 1934, he headed the cartographic sector of the Ukrainian Research Institute of Geodesy and Cartography, then - the department at the Kharkov Civil Engineering Institute.

In 1935, Ostashchenko-Kudryavtsev was approved as a professor , and in 1936 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Physics and Mathematics.

In September 1941, he was evacuated with his family to Alma-Ata , where in 1941-1944 he was a professor at the Mining and Metallurgical Institute and headed the department of geodesy.

In the fall of 1944 he returned to Kharkov , where he continued to head the astrometric department of the observatory and the department of higher geodesy of the Kharkov Civil Engineering Institute.

In September 1955, he was appointed head of the newly created Department of Mine Surveying of the Kharkov Mining Institute.
