Story
Before World War I , two friends lived in Paris - Austrian Jules and Frenchman Jim. Once they saw an ancient statue in the museum and fell in love with it. Soon, a woman, very similar to a statue, materialized in their lives and bewitched both. For many years, friends waited in vain for which of them she would choose. Catherine stated that she loves one, then the other, then both of them. Gordian knot of mutual sympathy was cut by an unexpected tragedy.
Creation History
Truffaut found a novel by the little-known writer Roche when he rummaged in second-hand collapse, working as a critic in the magazine Caillet du Cinema . He fell in love with this book and made acquaintance with its author. At his request, Rocher agreed to write a script and dialogues for the film, but died before filming began.
Filming took place in Paris , on the Cote d'Azur and in Alsace from April 10 to June 28, 1961 , and already on January 23, 1962 the film was first presented to the French public and was a huge success, going down in history as a genuine encyclopedia of the French language of the new wave . Even Truffaut's idol, Jean Renoir , said that he would not mind seeing his name in the credits.
The experts were delighted with the mobility of the movie camera, which the operator Raul Kutar either holds in his hands, then ties it to a bicycle, or installs it on a helicopter, forcing him to write incredible pirouettes. The film’s stylistic ease is akin to the ease of experimenting heroes with their own feelings. Young people of the sixties saw in “Jules and Jim” a preaching of free love , although the film most likely highlights the doom of such a relationship.
Nine years after Jules and Jim, Truffaut filmed another Rocher novel, Two English Women and Continent .
