Agnieszka Holland and Andrzej Wajda analyze socialist society in the film through an intentionally everyday story about a Polish international journalist who is experiencing problems on the personal and professional front. The protagonist looks like a typical dissident , upholding the ideals of youth, which contradicts the reality of unprincipled, cynical functionaries from politics and journalism.
The parable of Andrzej Wajda about the state of spiritual life in Poland was not fully understood by the viewer either at the time of appearance, or at a later time, of changes in society. In this film, Andrzej Wajda in some respects duplicates the artistic style of his younger colleague Krzysztof Zanussi (cf., for example, “ Protective Colors ”, 1976 ). In the future, Wajda will make several more films on pressing social topics (The Man from Marble , 1976 , The Man from Iron , 1981 ).
The film won an ecumenical jury prize at the 1979 Cannes Film Festival .
Story
The film shows the drama of the talented Polish international journalist Jerzy Michalowski, who was left by his wife Eva. She went to another journalist (Jacek Rostiszewski), completely loyal to the socialist system. Personal tragedy coincides with problems at work: the protagonist has become objectionable to the party bosses, who suit him with unspoken harassment.
Awareness of the meaninglessness of existence does not disappear even after the appearance of a mistress in the person of a student in love with him. Her silent, almost invisible image accompanies Mikhalovsky, like a guardian angel. In the final of the film, the main character literally burns himself, kills himself, causing an explosion of a faulty gas column in his kitchen. Powerless before the system of suppressing personality and outright duplicity, the hero no longer finds a place in a society of socialist stagnation.
We do not see the terrible death scene of Jerzy Michalowski. But in the final frames of the film, the director lifts a sheet with the hand of his wife, which covers the face of the hero lying on a stretcher. And it seems - a devilish, stubborn smile on his disfigured face.
