"Frankenstein Mary Shelley" ( eng. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein ) - a film in 1994, a screen version of Mary Shelley 's novel " Frankenstein, or Modern Prometheus ." Despite some discrepancies with the original literary work, this is the closest to the text film version of "Frankenstein" by Shelley.

The film became part of a series of film adaptations of classic horror literature, filmed in 1992-1996. Other such screenshots include Francis Ford Coppola's " Dracula Bram Stoker ", Mary Reilly (based on the story of Jekyll and Hyde ) and the movie " Wolf ", based on the werewolf legends.
In addition to playing one of the roles of the film director Kenneth Brana , actors such as Robert de Niro , Helena Bonham Carter , Ian Holm took part in the film.
In the American box office the film was unsuccessful, having collected only 22 million US dollars (with a budget of 45 million). Global fees taped 90 million.

Story
The beginning of the XIX century. Captain Walton and his team are on their way to the North Pole . When his ship is trapped in ice, he meets the scientist Victor Frankenstein ( Kenneth Brande ). There is a creature ahead and Walton wants to know who it is. Victor begins his story.
The action is postponed a few years ago. Young and inquisitive Victor Frankenstein from Geneva is making great strides in science. Leaving to study in Ingolstadt ( Germany ), he promises his half-sister Elizabeth ( Helena Bonham Carter ) to marry her when she returns. At university, he meets Professor Waldman ( John Cleese ), who studied the human body, and came close to creating an artificial person. Waldman categorically refuses to continue research further. After the murder of the professor, the city dweller Frankenstein decides to continue his teacher’s work.
Trying to create a perfect man, Victor is stunned as to how disgusting the creation came about as a result of his experiment. On the night after his creation, the monster ( Robert de Niro ) runs away. Having escaped from the angry citizens, who took him for the cholera peddler, the Creation settles in the shed of a house of a peasant family. Doing hard work at night, he deserved the love of his hosts for the "good forest spirit." However, after meeting with the Creation, the peasants chase him away and leave.
Having learned by that time to read and speak, the Creation learns (from the diary of Frankenstein, which it found in the clothes taken from Victor), as it was born, and swears to take revenge on Frankenstein. Reaching Geneva, the Creature kills Brother Victor - William. An angry mob cracks down on Justine, the maidservant in the house of Frankenstein, suspecting her of murder. Having met with Victor, the Creature says that he will be gone from people forever if he creates a woman for him. Victor marries Elizabeth and decides to leave, but the Creature finds the newlyweds and rips out Elizabeth’s heart.
Victor enlivens Elizabeth, connecting her head with the body of the executed Justine. The appeared Creation calls her to itself. Elizabeth, not knowing what to do, burns herself.
The action is transferred back to the ship of Captain Walton. Frankenstein dies. Near the body of its creator, the team finds Creation After the ice around the ship recedes, Walton takes a course back to England. Behind him, the Creation burns itself with the body of the dead Victor Frankenstein.

Deviations from the novel
Despite the fact that the film is one of the closest adaptations of the text of the novel, some changes were made. For example, in the novel, after Creation asks to create a woman for himself, Victor reluctantly agrees, but stops just before reviving the Monster Woman.

- Brana insisted that the word "monster" not be used in the credits of the film. In the book of the character, De Niro was symbolically called “The Demon”, which, however, did not fit into the film.
- One of the secondary roles could have been played by Christopher Lambert , but shortly before the shooting began, he was replaced by another actor.
- In one scene, Robert De Niro was supposed to bite the episodic heroine played by Fay Ripley . The scene was filmed, but it was not included in the final version.
- Sir Christopher Lee, who was present at the premiere, asked journalists what the main difference between this film and “Frankenstein” of 1957, where he himself played a monster, the actor joked: “40 years and 40 million dollars”.
