Description
Anolis are relatively small and slender lizards, usually green or brown. Their long fingers, like those of geckos , are equipped with tenacious plates to help them move along smooth vertical surfaces. Males of most species of anoles have a brightly colored throat sac, which they can protrude with the help of the movements of the hyoid bone. He plays a special role in attracting females to the mating season, as well as to scare away rivals. There are species with a less pronounced growth that can make sounds and even communicate with relatives. All anoles know how to change color depending on mood and other factors. Almost all anolis feed on insects , and a combed anolis ( Anolis cristatellus ) has eaten fruit .
Systematics
At the end of 2011, there were 391 species in the family, which make up 2 genera [2] [3] :
| Latin name | Russian name | amount species |
|---|---|---|
| Anolis | anoles | 384 [4] |
| Polychrus | polychruses, or long-legged iguanas | 7 |
Earlier, the genera of the modern family Polychrotidae were considered as part of the iguanas as a subfamily. In 1989, scientists Frost and Etheridge separated them into an independent family. In 2004, they allotted six South American genera to the new Leiosauridae family.
Learning
In 2011, the North American red-necked anolis ( Anolis carolinensis ) was completely decrypted for the first time. Deciphering its genome clarified the evolution of vertebrates, and also helped to answer some questions related to the release of life on land. [5] .
