Biography

“ Mary Magdalene ” (1858-60)

Frederic Sandis, real name - Antonio Frederic Augustus Sands ( born Antonio Frederic Augustus Sands ), was born on May 1, 1829 in Norwich , County Norfolk . He received his first drawing lessons from his father, who himself was an artist. In 1846, Sandys, who showed outstanding abilities, [1] went to the Norwich School of Design on the advice of his father, and gained fame thanks to a cartoon on John Everett Millet's " Sir Izumbras " in 1857 . Instead of a horse, the artist placed a donkey marked with the letters “JR, Oxon” (JR - John Ruskin , Oxon - Oxford ), Millet sat in knightly armor from above, and two young children in front and behind portrayed Mille's comrades of the Pre-Raphaelites Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt . The parody was called "Nightmare", Eng. " A Nightmare . " [2] Oddly enough, Sandys and Rossetti became close friends; Sandys even lived at one time in Rossetti's house in Cheney-Wok ( Chelsea ). Many of Sandys’s paintings were heavily influenced by Rossetti, who later accused him of plagiarism . [3]

Medea (1868)

In the 1860s , Sandys gained some recognition by working in such periodicals as Once a Week , Cornhill Magazine , and Good Words . Sandys's illustrations, never published in books, but only in magazines, are now very much appreciated by collectors . In the same period, his paintings appear in galleries . The most famous are “Viviana” ( English Vivien , 1863), “Fairy of Morgan” ( English Morgan le Fay , 1864), “Cassandra” ( English Cassandra ), “ Elena Troyanskaya ” ( English Helen of Troy ) and Medea ( English Medea , 1868) However, Sandis, who devoted little time to painting, never became a famous artist during his lifetime.

Sandis always suffered from a lack of money, including because he drank a lot. [3] At the age of 27, he married Georgiana Creed , [4] but lived with her for only three years, although the divorce was never officially filed. Sandys spent the rest of his life with actress Mary Jones (stage name - Miss Cleve, Eng. Miss Clive [2] ), who became known as “ Mrs. Sandys” and gave birth to ten children. [4] He died in London in 1904 .

Creativity

Sandis paintings and drawings can now be found in many famous museums, in particular, in the National Portrait Gallery in London, in the Manchester Art Gallery , in the Tate Gallery , in the Norwich Museums, in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts .

Sandis is considered one of the most talented Pre-Raphaelites . [2] His favorite topics were the legends of the Arturovsky cycle (“Morgan Fairy”) and Norse mythology (“Valkyrie”), he is also the author of several portraits of famous people in particular, Tennyson and Browning .
