History
The fortress was built on top of a hill and is surrounded by a 6.5 km long wall with 14 towers. The eastern section of the wall goes almost to the sea, right to the Red Tower . The fortress accommodated about 400 inhabitants. At the very top of the hill, located in its western part, at an altitude of 250 meters above sea level, the ruins of the castle rise.
The castle was built in the XIII century by the Seljuk Sultan Ala-ad-din Kay-Kubad on the site of earlier fortifications of the Byzantine and Roman periods. The castle had several gates - one main with inscriptions inscribed on them and several auxiliary ones. Most of them are currently destroyed.
Building
Inside the castle there are several ancient buildings, such as brick cisterns, bathtubs and the Byzantine church of St. George, 4-5 century AD In the XIX century , many residential villas were built on the territory of the fortress.
Present
Currently, the fortress has been turned into an open-air museum . Entrance to the castle is paid (24 Turkish liras ), but most of the fortress can be visited for free.
