Story
Eleven-year-old Mark Sway and his younger brother Ricky smoke cigarettes in the woods near their home when they encounter Mafia lawyer W. Jerome Clifford. Clifford tells Mark that he is going to kill himself to avoid killing Barry "blade" Muldano, nephew of the infamous mafia leader Johnny Sulari. Ricky falls into a catatonic stupor after seeing suicide , and is hospitalized in St. Peter's Hospital. Authorities and the mafia intend to find out what Clifford told Mark before his death about where the senator of Louisiana , who had previously been killed by Muldano, was buried.
Mark meets Regina “Reggie Love,” a lawyer who agrees to represent his interests. They quickly come across the “reverend” Roy Faltrig, the famous and conceited American lawyer who uses the case as a springboard for his political ambitions. Meanwhile, it turns out that Sulari never gave Muldano consent to remove the senator, and wants Muldano to find out how much the boys know about it. He must also transfer the body of the senator, but this is currently not possible because he is buried in the Clifford boathouse and the police are investigating his suicide.
Faltrig continues to use legal means to force Mark to show where the body is hidden, while Sulari orders Muldano to kill the children and Reggie. He also orders that the body be moved as soon as the investigation at Clifford’s house is completed. Mark is threatened in a hospital elevator by a member of the mafia Paul Grönke, and he cannot speak with Faltrigg.
Mark and Reggie travel to New Orleans to confirm that the body is in Clifford’s territory. Reggie intends to use this information to make a deal with Faltrig to provide specialized medical care to Ricky and put the family in a witness protection program . Reggie and Mark arrive at Clifford’s house the same night as Muldano and his associates. They dig up the body, followed by hand-to-hand combat when Mark and Reggie discover. Moldano and the rest of the bandits scatter after Reggie presses the alarm button from the neighbors.
Faltrig agrees to Reggie's offer in exchange for body location information. Before the family will leave to continue their life under new names, Mark and Reggie heartily say goodbye. While Muldano is angry with his mafia associates, who have ruined the entire enterprise, Sulari gets tired of his plans to deal with him. With his body restored, Faltrig declares his intention to run for governor.
