The city is located on a rocky peninsula of the central coast of Tunisia 20 km south of Sousse and 162 km south of the capital, Tunisia .
Monastir stands on the site of the ancient Phoenician city-colony Rus Penna , founded in the 5th century BC . The modern city is based on the ruins of the Numidian city of Ruspin , near which on January 4, 46 BC. e., in the course of Caesar’s confrontation with Pompey , there was a series of fierce clashes between the troops of the two former triumvirs , which ended with varying success; during the fighting, the Pompeian Mark Petreus was seriously injured [2] . In the 5th century AD, the Byzantines built a powerful fortress here to protect the commercial port.
The main historical attraction of Monastir is the Ribat Hartem fortress. Monastir also has a medina , the monumental mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba, a museum of Islamic art, the Mosque of Soborna, Sidi Ali al-Meseri at the Kubbu cemetery and others, a marina harbor with pleasure boats, a large promenade with rocky capes, a promenade, beaches and a mermaid statue. The city has a children's amusement park, a yacht club, a diving center, a golf club, and a riding school in Skanes. There are also a large number of restaurants, bars, gift shops.
