Biography
Johann Nikolaus Forkel was born February 22, 1749 in Meder in the family of a shoemaker; studied music with a local cantor, but overall remained self-taught.
In adolescence, he was a chorusist in Luneburg , then studied law for a while at the University of Gottingen and later on throughout his life remained connected with him, acting as organist, teacher of piano and music theory, and then music director; in 1787, the university awarded him a doctorate in honoris causa . Among his students was, in particular, Christophe August Gabler [4] .
Fundamental to the scientific history of music are the works of Forkel “On the Theory of Music” ( German Über die Theorie der Musik ; 1777) and “The General History of Music” ( German Allgemeine Geschichte der Musik ; 1788). Forkel also wrote the first biography of Johann Sebastian Bach ( 1802 ), the value of which is all the more so because during the work on this work, Forkel corresponded with the sons of Bach Wilhelm Friedemann and Karl Philippe Emmanuel .
