Criticism
“ Time Out ” called the film “great fun” and “a surprisingly successful attempt to report new changes to the old theme” [2] .
George R. Reis from the DVD Drive-In gave a positive review of the film, writing: “In the hands of most filmmakers of that time, this topic of gender reassignment would require maximum tact, but not with Hemmer. Clemens’s script doesn’t take itself too seriously, but rightly combines the legends of Stevenson’s character with Jack the Ripper and the grave diggers Burke and Heir. ” Reis praised the production of the film and the direction of Baker [3] .
Variety Magazine called the film “very creative”: “Director Roy Ward Baker set a good pace, built up tension and beat it so that everything seemed plausible. He combines horrific killings with rather subtle humor. Bates and Beswick, strong, attractive personalities, have a strange resemblance to each other, which makes the transitions quite plausible ” [4] .
Starburst Magazine's John Higgins awarded the film 8 out of 10 stars, praising Beswick's work and screenplay. [5]
