Mackinac Island is an island in Lake Huron ( USA ), or rather in the Makino Strait connecting Lake Huron and Michigan . Area - 9.78 km².

Due to the presence of many historical attractions ( fort of the beginning of the XIX century , churches, hotels), the whole island has the status of National Historic Landmark. Eighty percent of the island’s territory is occupied by Makino Island State Park (it was founded in 1875 as a national park ).
Back in 1898, mechanical transport was prohibited on the island. This law is still valid. An exception is made only for emergency vehicles, company vehicles and snowmobiles (in winter). Residents move around the island on bicycles , horse drawn carts and on foot . The island is connected to the outside world by a high-speed ferry crossing (including from Mackinaw City ), a charter airline (the island has its own airport ). Along the perimeter of the island is the M-185 road.
