Story

Movie frame

In the provincial American town, in the house on the outskirts, the Grape family lives: mother -Bonnie Grape , who lost her husband early, became abnormally stout and therefore became a recluse; senior Amy's daughter - without the prospect of getting married in a small town; Arnie’s son is a boy of 18 years old, mentally disabled, who, according to doctors, can die at any second, which needs an eye and an eye, because each time he is left unattended, he tries to climb the city water tower ; and younger Sister Ellen is 15 years old, who wants to finally grow up. Bonnie's eldest son takes care of all of them - Gilbert Grape Gilbert is a guy with no prospects for the future in such a wilderness, worries about the house and its inhabitants tie him hand and foot. Gilbert works in a small grocery store, the owner of which barely makes ends meet because of the nearby supermarket , looks after Arnie so that nothing happens to him, from time to time he satisfies a mature married woman, a mother of two children - Mrs. Carver , every now and then, asks her father's friend to fix their house because of the real danger that the floorboards will not stand Bonnie and she will fall into the basement.

The only entertainment for Gilbert and Arnie in this wilderness is to watch a caravan of trailers drive once a year along the road past their town. Once one of the trailers due to a breakdown in the engine stopped nearby, and its inhabitants - a young girl Becky , traveling with her grandmother, is forced to stay here for a whole week until the motor is repaired.

Gilbert is now dreaming of a new life. But taking care of the household does not give him the opportunity to leave with the girl. After some time, Becky leaves the town, and the guy returns to gray weekdays. Suddenly his mother Bonnie dies. Gilbert decides to burn the house along with her body, forever putting an end to the past.

Over time, his sisters find work and arrange a personal life. Becky's trailer is again visible on the horizon. This time, Gilbert with his lover and brother goes on a trip.
