Story
The film takes place in 1967 .
Three inseparable friends - A Bee, Fi and Wing - live in Hong Kong , overwhelmed by unrest and unrest. Their life is hard, but there is a place in it for simple human joys. One of the heroes, A Bee, marries a girl named Jane. But on wedding day, friends accidentally kill the leader of a local criminal group and are forced to hide. Lovers have to part. The three of them decide in search of a better life to go to Vietnam , where there is a war .
In order to earn a living, they undertake to deliver dubious goods to a certain Mr. Leon, the bigwig of the underground business and the keeper of the brothel. However, in Vietnam they find themselves at the scene of an assassination attempt against a high-ranking ARV officer, and goods destined for Leong die in an explosion arranged by a suicide bomber. Not knowing how best to get out of the situation, the characters get acquainted with the killer Luke working for Leon. Wing lights up the idea of the power of weapons and asks Luke to supply him with a pistol . He wants to become an influential and wealthy man, as opposed to his janitor father, and swears that he will kill everyone who interferes with him.
Meanwhile, A Bee met Sally Yen, a singer from Hong Kong, whom Leong tricked into working at his club. And Bi wants to help Sally Yen, because she reminds him of Jane abandoned in Hong Kong, and when she sees that in Vietnam there is as much violence as in his native Hong Kong, she firmly decides to change the situation. It also turns out that Luke was in love with Sally Yen and was already trying to help her escape, but the lovers were caught by the people of Leon, Luke was severely beaten. Together with Luke, the friends decide to rob Leon, and at the same time take his passport from Ian. Having unleashed a serious firefight in the Leon’s club, four grab a box of gold bars belonging to him and find Sally Yen’s passport, but she dies during the shootout. Friends flee from war-torn Vietnam, they are pursued by bandits and ARV soldiers; ultimately, they come across a Viet Cong squad and are captured, only Luke manages to escape.
And Bee, Fi and Wing are experiencing the horrors of a Vietnamese camp. When Vietnamese find CIA intelligence in a box of Leon’s gold that was handed over to them by corrupt officers of the South Vietnamese army, they begin to suspect friends of having links with the CIA and interrogate them. As an entertainment, the partisans force them to shoot American prisoners, but at that moment Luke appears with a detachment of American soldiers. In the ensuing massacre, friends manage to escape, but A Bi and Faya are injured. Fi screams asks Wing to help him, but the one who has taken possession of the box of gold becomes obsessed, and shoots Fayu in the head so that he does not unmask him in a field teeming with partisans. By force capturing a boat in the village, Wing hides in an unknown direction.
After recovering from a wound, A Bee visits Luke, who has become disabled. He tells him the bleak news. It turns out that Fi survived, but the bullet is still in his head, and he is going crazy with terrible pain, leading the life of a homeless drug addict and criminal. And Bi is trying to visit Fay, but he does not recognize his old friend, and even tries to kill him. And Bi, unable to bear the pathetic appearance of his best friend, kills Fay. Before death, he seems to come to his senses and asks with a gesture to stop his life.
And Bi returns to Hong Kong, where he meets with Jane and finds out that he has a son, who, ironically, was named Fay. A Bee has one more thing to do. He comes to the office of a certain company, to Wing, who has just become its head. He, in the presence of company directors, accuses Wing of killing a friend for the sake of money, and in evidence shows Faya's skull with a bullet hole. But Wing dismisses all the charges. Then A Bee takes revenge on Wing: the final scene includes a car chase and a bloody shootout.

Filming
- For the American distribution of the film, the names of the main characters were replaced by the American ones: Ben (AB), Frank (Fay) and Paul (Wing).
- The scene where Faya in Leon’s bar was forced to gulp a bottle of a strong drink was significantly reduced. A sequel was cut out, where Leong then makes all three friends drink a mug of urine. The same scene is a reference to John Wu's early film, The Bright Future , where Mark ( Chow Yunfat ) tells the story.
- The alternative final scene was much shorter than the rolling one. In it, A Bee kills Wing right in the conference room, throwing a jacket over his head just like Wing did with Faye. Alternative Scene Link
- Some episodes of the film contain short references to well-known photo and television shots, for example, a man stopping a tank .
