Story

The film takes place in Spanish Madrid in the late 1860s against the backdrop of a severe domestic political crisis and a looming revolution.

The film tells about the life of don Jaime Astarloa, an outstanding master of fencing. He involuntarily has to participate in a political conspiracy (in which people whom he trusted are involved) that endangered his life.

It all starts on the most ordinary day when don Jaime trains the students. Don Jaime receives a letter in which a certain Adela de Otero asks him to meet. After a while, she herself visits him and expresses a desire to study fencing with don Jaime. At first, he categorically refuses, but the ownership of the sword demonstrated by Adela softens him and he agrees to deal with it.

Adela is not at all new to fencing, and during lessons, Don Jaime demonstrates to her a mortal blow created by himself. In addition, something closer than a teacher-student relationship is beginning to mature between them.

Then Adela meets, with disapproval of don Jaime, with the young Marquis Luis de Ayala, who was accidentally seen by her, a student of don Jaime and a well-known retired politician, famous for his love affairs. Adela began to flirt openly with the Marquis and skip classes, so don Jaime said goodbye to her.

Once the marquis invited him to him and told the story of some extremely important papers, handed them these papers and asked them to save, because the fencing teacher is the only one whom Ayala trusts. Soon after, the Marquis was found dead, and Don Jaime, who came to him, was interrogated by a police inspector. Don Jaime did not give documents and could not provide the inspector with any interesting information.

Subsequently, considering that the papers could be connected with the crime, don Jaime read them. The letters mentioned some political events and the names of influential people. To learn more, the teacher decided to meet with his acquaintance journalist Agapito Carleses, a political pamphleteer. Agapito, excitedly reading the papers, said that they are evidence of an unprecedented political scandal. At this time, a lover of the handmaid of Donna Adela came running to don Jaime with the news that something terrible had happened in the house and they both went there. In the house they found traces of blood, but the absence of corpses. Then the inspector, who was also in the house, drove don Jaime to identify the found corpse of Donna Adela.

Returning home, don Jaime discovered that Carlesles had left and took the documents with him. An angry don Jaime, penetrating the journalist’s house, found the owner there bound and bleeding. Then two murderers appeared, whom Don Jaime put to flight with the help of a cane, which he always carried with him.

Don Jaime returned home and some time later someone entered his office. It turned out to be Adela de Otero. She told him about her life, the imitation of her own death and her essence as an experienced killer, who was involved in a conspiracy against the Marquis Ayala. A battle ensued, which ended with the death blow of Don Jaime's training sword and the death of Adela de Otero.
