The decision to build a shopping center in Chelyabinsk was made in July 1960 . During construction, a reinforced concrete shell constructed by the Leningrad Design Institute No. 1 of the Gosstroy of the USSR was used as a coating. The building project was completed by the Giprotorg Moscow Institute (architects F. Seletsky, V. Zhadovskaya, L. Ragozina; project chief engineer B. Markov, chief designer A. Shapiro). Initially, the building was planned to be built at the intersection of Lenin Avenue with Rossiyskaya Street ^[1] . The shopping center was put into operation on December 22, 1975 .

The building measuring 102 by 102 meters is a spherical reinforced concrete dome, which, as it were, "hovers" in the air. Inside the building there are no columns supporting the shell, and the corners on which the dome rests are placed on special skating rinks and can move. The design is prefabricated and can “breathe”, falling or rising depending on temperature changes (in Chelyabinsk the climate is continental, the temperature in winter can drop to −40 ° C, and in summer rise to + 40 ° C ^[2] ). At the time of construction, such a technical solution of prefabricated reinforced concrete slabs of this size of the object had no precedent in world practice ^[3] . The weight of a dome assembled from 1,500 reinforced concrete slabs tied with ropes is over 5,000 tons ^[4] .

The building of the Shopping Center is marked with a diploma of the first degree of VDNH of the USSR. In a meeting of members of an international organization for spatial structures in Helsinki in 1976, the Soviet delegation in their report talked about a building in Chelyabinsk. The layout of the dome was exhibited at international exhibitions in New York ( 1974 ) and in London ( 1978 ); The building was marked by leading experts of the world. ^[five]

The area of ​​trade and storage facilities is 18 thousand m² ^[6] .

Near the building of the Shopping Center, the construction of the metro station of the same name is underway.

The project of the Shopping Center was used in the construction of the Minsk Komarovsky Market (opened in 1980).
