Biography

In sports

Peggy started figure skating rather late, only at the age of nine.

In 1961, when Fleming was 12 years old, her coach Mark Clareson died in a plane crash Sabena 548, along with most of the US national figure skating team flying to the 1961 World Cup. Later Peggy Fleming trained by Carlo Fassi . He managed to discern in the young athlete a future "star" with a rare combination - composure and endurance, on the one hand, and a great sense of musicality, subtle artistry - on the other.

Her unusual style allowed Peggy Fleming to climb the top step of the podium five times at the US championships, three at the world championships.

In 1968, Fleming received the only US gold medal at the Olympic Games in Grenoble , despite a number of mistakes in the free program, where she performed uncertainly (with loss of balance, with triples, etc.) even single jumps, performed instead of double jumps ( for example, Axel , Salchow ), and six of nine judges, not taking these errors into account, still put the marks for 5.9 for the technique, focusing on “past achievements” Fleming (judge from the GDR , putting Seifert in first place, who performed more difficult program, turned out to be alone).

After sports

Having finished competing in amateurs, Peggy Fleming traveled the US for several years as a special guest star in the Ice Follies show. She was invited to work on television, but for the first two years she mainly participated in special ice revues that were created at the television studio. One of these revue films was shot in the USSR (filming took place against the background of ancient monuments in Moscow , Leningrad ) The screen allowed me to show again the close-ups of all the advantages of the famous figure skater's style.

Then Peggy Fleming was a commentator on figure skating competitions for the ABC channel for more than 20 years.

In 1970, she married the dermatologist Greg Jenkins (in his youth he performed in ice dancing ). They live in the vicinity of San Francisco . The couple has two sons and three grandchildren.

In 1998, Fleming was diagnosed with breast cancer . Since he was discovered at an early stage, surgical treatment was successful.

Fleming and her husband also own vineyards and a winery in California. The plant produces wines from such brands as Choreography Cabernet and San Francisco Bay Syrah Rosé. And the profits from the sale of wine "Victories Rosé" goes to charities that support breast cancer research.
