On September 19, 1917, the future queen married her distant relative - the Honorable Tamasi'i 'William Tungi Tupoulahi Maililefili Tuku'akho ( 1887 - 1941 ), later - the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Prime Minister Tonga [4] .
October 11, 1918 was crowned as Queen under the name of Salote Tupou III. She carried out agricultural reform, established health care and education systems, and preserved and developed traditional crafts [5] .
She became known to the whole world on June 2, 1953 , when she took part in the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II . Three million viewers stood on the streets of London along the path of a solemn procession, tens of millions of people on the planet watched the live television broadcast of this event. During the coronation, it began to rain heavily, through the close jets of which only the covered crew of the motorcade could be seen, in which the honored guests followed the golden carriage of Elizabeth. Only one of the crews was thrown back. Inside was a large black woman (1.91 m tall), and, despite the cold downpour, she smiled at the spectators soaked to the skin, waving a hand in a friendly way.
She died on December 16, 1965, at 00:15 local time, but since Tonga is one of the first days (the kingdom lies near the date line ), it was December 15 in the rest of the world. Because of this, the date of her death in various sources dates back either to December 15 or December 16 [6] .
