The Valtatie 4 ( E75 ) motorway passes through the city, one of the important transport links between the north and the south.

In 1985, the International Mathematical Olympiad was held here. In summer, the city hosts the Joutsan Joutopäivät music festival, which attracts about 25 thousand visitors.
