History
Curto Institute was founded in 1932 by textile manufacturer and art collector Samuel Curto , diplomat and collector Lord Arthur Lee and art historian Sir Robert Witt . In addition to financial support, Kurto donated most of his art collection to the Institute during his lifetime, and after his death, his house, built by architect Robert Adam at Portman Square , became its headquarters. According to the founders, the teaching of the history of art was supposed to take place directly on the example of works of art collected at the Institute. The collection of French impressionism by Samuel Curto in 1934 was joined by a collection of art of the 20th century. art critic Roger Fry . After the Second World War, the funds of the Curto Institute of Art were replenished with the works of old masters : Peter Brueghel the Elder , Cranach , Peter Paul Rubens , Giovanni Battista Tiepolo , Quentin Masseis , Anthony van Dyck from the collection of Lord Lee Farham and other collections. In 1989 , the Curto Institute of the Arts moved to Somerset House , which previously housed the Royal Academy of Arts.
