Biography

In 1932, Georg Shpilner began working as a dentist in the Thuringian city of Calais . He soon abandoned his profession and became a musical clown. Nook achieved his first successes in 1937 at the German Theater in Munich, which presented him as "the most famous clown in Europe." Nook's β€œtrademark” was a huge suitcase and a large plaid coat, in which various musical instruments were hidden. Nook was one of the few outstanding clowns of his time, rightfully considered the most famous musical clown of the 20th century. He performed until the 1980s throughout Europe, including at such famous venues as the Hamburg variety show Hansatheater, Olimpia in Paris or the Friedrichstadtpalast theater in Berlin, with unchanged success.

Despite the fallen fame (β€œThe most tender clown of all time” - as the newspapers titled him already in 1962 ), Nook was rather modest. Despite the comparisons made from time to time with the Swiss clown Grock (Shpilner was not even familiar with him), his stage program was a completely independent work. Thanks to his exceptional musicality (Nook played various instruments - violin, clarinet, flute, harmonica, concertina, mandolin and saxophone) and the artist's great talent, he managed to delight thousands of spectators across Europe.

For many years, his wife Nukelina, who played the piano, assisted him in performances. Nook performed with Josephine Baker , with cabaret artist Werner Fink and chansonnier Jacques Brel . In 1950, along with Karl Raddac , Inga Meisel and Hannelore, Schrot Nook starred in the feature film Taxi-Kitty.

In 1991, for donations to former circus performers, the clown Nook received the German Merit Cross.

Quotes

  • β€œThere is a stereotype in literature, opera and operetta that a clown in private life should be a sad person who must be a joker on stage. It sounds good as a stereotype, but it has nothing to do with reality, and especially with me. ”
  • β€œTo become a clown, you don’t need to learn, you have to be him, work hard - and everything will work out.”
