Arakich

Arakich - ( Abkh. Arakiaьy , cargo. არაკიჩი , Armenian. Արաքիչ ) is a village in Abkhazia , in the Ochamchyr region of the partially recognized Republic of Abkhazia , according to the administrative division of Georgia - in the Ochamchir municipality of the Abkhaz Autonomous Republic [1] . It is located northwest of the Ochamchira district center in a flat strip. From 1950 to 1953, Agaraki was officially named. Administratively, the village is the administrative center of the Arakich village administration ( Abkh. Arakiaҽy aқyҭa ahadara ), formerly the Araki village council . The official Russian name of the village is the Armenian transcription of the Abkhaz Arakyatsha - “crooked nut”.

Borders

In the north, Arakich borders on the village of Atara ; in the east - with the village of Kyndyg ; in the south and west - with the village of Adzyubzha .

Population

According to the 1989 census, the population of the Arakichsky village council was 2172 people, thus it was the largest in the number of residents in the Ochamchir region among Armenian villages. According to the 2011 census, the population of the Arakich rural administration amounted to 873 people, mostly Armenians [4] [5] .

Until the beginning of the 20th century, the area where the village of Arakich is now located belonged to the Adzyubzhinsky rural community. The village of Arakich arose after 1915 , when part of the Hamshen Armenians who survived from the extermination from the Ottoman Empire settled on these lands.

In the first decades of Soviet rule, Arakich was not a separate village. Its territory was divided between the Adzyubzhinsky and Atara-Abkhazian village councils. The total number of Armenians in these two village councils according to the 1926 census was 621 people.

During the Georgian-Abkhaz war, the village of Arakich was occupied by Georgian troops, the local population was severely affected by war criminals. After the war, the population of Arakich was greatly reduced.
