Marina (genre)

Marina ( French marine , Italian marina , from Latin marinus - marine) is a genre of fine art depicting a sea view [1] , as well as a scene of a sea ​​battle or other events taking place at sea. It is a kind of landscape . As an independent type of landscape painting, the marina stood out at the beginning of the 17th century in Holland .

Marinist ( fr. Mariniste ) - an artist who writes marinas [2] . The prominent representatives of this genre are the Englishman William Turner and the Russian artist Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky , who wrote about 6,000 paintings on the marine theme.

In France, there is the official title of artist of the Navy, assigned by the Minister of Defense to outstanding mariner artists. The title can be awarded not only to artists, but also to photographers, illustrators, engravers and sculptors (for more details see Fleet Artist ).
