Having played 125 matches for the national team, Given went down in history as one of the champions in the number of games for the national team of Ireland [2] . Thus, he entered the list of players who played more than 100 matches for the national team. He made his debut for the Irish national team in 1996 and has since been constantly called up to the national team. He spent all the games at the gates of the Irish national team at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea [3] . Given played at the gate of the Irish in the butt games with France in 2009 for the right to speak at the 2010 World Cup and in the qualifying campaign for the European Championship 2012 , as well as at the European Championship itself .
Given started his club career at Celtic , but was unable to break into the main team and was forced to go to Blackburn Rovers . Composed of “Tramps” Given also could not become the main goalkeeper and went on loan to Swindon Town , and then to Sunderland . In the 1995/96 season, Sunderland won the First Division of the Football League . In 1997 he moved to Newcastle United , where he was able to win a place in the first team. Reaching the FA Cup finals in 1998 and 1999 as part of his team, Shay Given was included in the symbolic Premier League team for the seasons 2001/02 and 2005/06 . On February 1, 2009, Givent moved to Manchester City for £ 7 million. However, as part of “Blue” Given gave way to the gate to Joe Hart and in 2011 signed a contract with Aston Villa , which, according to various estimates, paid about 3.5 million pounds for it [4] .

Club career
Career start
In the hometown of Neck, football was inferior in terms of rugby and Gaelic football , but Given from a young age (like his three older brothers) began to play traditional football [5] . Given started playing football in Lifford’s hometown on the local Lifford Celtic children’s team. Given in his debut season, Given scored 7 goals, and was in the spotlight when his team played in the semifinals of the children’s cup of the Football Association of Ireland in Dundalk . At the age of 14, he was noticed by the scouts of the Scottish Celtic [6] , and he was invited to train with the club’s youth team during a pre-season tour of Ireland in 1991. Given signed a professional contract with the club a year later, which at that moment was headed by Given's compatriot Liam Brady . Shay spent 2 years in the Celts, but despite the fact that he was declared as a reserve goalkeeper in the derby with the Rangers on January 1, 1994 [7] , he did not become the main player [8] . His appearances for the club’s youth team attracted the attention of Blackburn coach Kenny Dalglish , and Given signed a contract with the English team as a free agent in the summer of 1994 [9] .
Blackburn Rovers
After moving to the “vagrants” camp, Given's team won the Premier League , and the young goalkeeper himself could not compete for a place in the base with England goalkeeper Tim Flowers [10] [11] . In 1995, Shay went on loan to Swindon Town , with whom he won the Football League Second Division in the 1995/96 season . In the triumphant season for the Wiltshire team, Shay spent 5 matches in which he missed 1 goal, after which he returned to Blackburn [8] . In January 1996, Given was again leased, this time to the Sunderland First Division club. Behind “Black cats” Given spent 17 matches, of which in 12 he did not miss a single ball [12] . At the end of the season , Sunderland took 1st place and achieved an improvement in class. After returning to the Blackburn camp, Given on December 14, 1996 made his debut in the English Premier League, in a guest meeting against Wimbledon (0: 1). In total, Shay played in 2 matches as a part of the team in the Premier League and in the 1st game in the League Cup . The successful performance of the young goalkeeper for Sunderland again attracted the interest of Kenny Dalglish, who became the coach of Newcastle United . In the summer of 1997, Shay Given was sold to Newcastle for £ 1.5 million.
Newcastle United
Shay Given made his new team debut on August 9, 1997 in a game against Sheffield Wensday , which ended in victory “Forty” with a score of 2: 1. In “Newcastle” Given immediately became the main goalkeeper, leaving on the bench Pavel Srnichek , Shaku Hislop and Stephen Harper [11] [13] . In November 1997, Given missed a curious goal in a match with Coventry City (2: 2): during the introduction of the ball into the game, Shay forgot that the forward of the opponent Dion Dublin remained behind him. Dublin took advantage of Given's mistake and rolled the ball into the empty net. After this incident, a phrase based on a play on words because of the consonance of the name of the striker and the capital of Ireland became popular with fans: “Given is the only Irishman who does not know where Dublin is located” [14] [15] . In his debut season, Given spent 6 matches in the Champions League (including the game with Barcelona (3: 2)), in which he missed 10 goals [16] .
In the debut season for Given, “Newcastle” reached the final of the FA Cup , but was defeated in it by Arsenal (0: 2) [17] . In the 1998/1999 season , Newcastle reiterated its achievement, helped by a good Neck game. On January 2, 1999, in the FA Cup match against Crystal Palace , Given was first removed from the field, this happened at the 14th minute of the meeting. However, this did not prevent Newcastle from winning a strong-willed victory - 2: 1. However, in the final match Given gave way to the goal to Stephen Harper, and his team lost to Manchester United - 2-0 [18] .
The following season , team head coach Ruud Gullit began to increasingly trust the base place to Stephen Harper. However, after coming to the coaching bridge “forty” one of the most experienced British coaches, a former coach of the English national team Bobby Robson Given returned to his place in the first team. Soon, Shay was injured, and a place in the gate again took Harper. However, after restoration, Given again firmly took a place in the composition [19] . In the 2001/02 season, Given spent all the matches in the championship, Newcastle took 4th place, and Shey was included in the team of the year in the English Premier League [20] [21] . This season, Given finally became the main goalkeeper of the team, having played all the matches in the championship and in European competitions.
The next season was the richest at that time in Given's career (in total that season, Shay had 51 matches at the club level). In the Champions League qualification, the Magpies defeated the Bosnian Zheleznichar with a total score of 5: 0, and Newcastle became a member of the Champions League group round. Given's team fell into the same group as Dynamo , Juventus and Feyenoord from Kiev [22] . Shay spent the first 3 games that were all lost [23] [24] [25] . In the next 2 games he was replaced by Harper [26] [27] , and in the last game in Rotterdam, Given returned again to the gate. In that game, Newcastle won 3–2 and advanced to the second group round [28] . In the second group round, rivals of Newcastle were Inter , Barcelona and Bayer 04 [29] . According to the results of the second group round “Black and white” took 3rd place in the group and stopped fighting in the Champions League. In the championship of England, “Newcastle” took 3rd place, which gave the team the right to once again play in the Champions League for next season.
The following season, in the Champions League qualification, they lost to Belgrade “ Partizan ” on a penalty and went to the UEFA Cup , where they reached the semifinals . Given team took 5th place in the national championship, which allowed her to play in the UEFA Cup.
At the beginning of next season, Graham Sunness replaced Bobby Robson as head coach of the team. After that, “black and white” showed a number of good results, but then went down to the middle of the tournament table, where they remained until the end of the season. This fact, coupled with several serious scandals, demoralized the team. That season, Given held 12 matches in the European Cup, where Newcastle reached the quarter finals, 3 in the FA Cup, where Newcastle reached the semifinals and 36 in the national championship, in which the team took 14th place.
In the 2005/06 season, Given held all the matches in the championship at a high level and, according to the results of the year, entered the symbolic Premier League team . Also this season, Given led “Newcastle” three times to the field with a captain's armband in the absence of Alan Shearer . Newcastle took 7th place, and Given extended the contract with the club for 5 years.
On September 17, 2006, Given was injured in a collision with West Ham United striker Marlon Herwood [30] . Doctors compared the gap in Given's gut with the severity of injuries sustained during car accidents [5] . During the recovery of Given, the head coach of the “black and white” Glenn Röder signed the former goalkeeper of the team Pavel Srnichek as a safety net for Stephen Harper [31] and gave the young goalkeeper Tim Krul his debut in the UEFA Cup mast with Palermo . Shey returned to the field on November 18, 2006 in the mast with Arsenal (1: 1) and played 22 games in the championship that season, and Newcastle took 13th place. Also that season, Given held the 400th match for “forty” in various tournaments [16] .
In February 2008, Given received a severe groin injury in a game with Manchester United and ahead of schedule ended the 2007/08 season . The beginning of the 2008/09 season turned out to be very difficult for the club. Injuries and other numerous problems led to the fact that Newcastle was forced to fight for survival. In November 2008, Tottenham Hotspur showed interest in Given, whose head coach Harry Redknapp admitted that he was a fan of Given's talent [32] . On January 2, 2009, after a major defeat from Liverpool (1: 5), Given's agent asked the Newcastle leadership to discuss with Manchester City representatives the possibility of transferring Neck to the camp "Citizens" [33] . The initial £ 5 million offer by City was rejected. Newcastle head coach Joe Kinnear stated that the club did not want to part with Given and considered the offer of 5 million as an insult [34] . Nevertheless, on January 30, it became known that the Newcastle leadership gave Given permission to negotiate with representatives of Manchester City [35] . January 17, 2009 Given held the last match for Newcastle as part of the 22nd round of the Premier League 2008/09 against Blackburn, which ended in the defeat of the Forty - 0: 3 [16] . On February 1, 2009, Given signed a contract with Manchester City, which paid £ 8 million for it. [36] [37] In February 2009, Newcastle United director Derek Lambias announced that Given had been sold for £ 5.9 million. [38] Given's departure from the team was perceived by the fans negatively. They also expressed the opinion that Shay left the club in difficult times, fearing the departure of the team to the Championship , which ultimately happened. Conflicts between the management, a frequent change of coaches and a bad game - all these became the main factors of Given's departure after 11 years of stay at St. James's Park [39] .
Total for Newcastle United Given spent eleven and a half seasons, playing in 463 games for the club. Of which 20 in the Champions League , 11 in the Intertoto Cup , 29 in the UEFA Cup , 2 in the Cup and 354 games in the Premier League , in which they lost 474 goals, 34 in the FA Cup and 12 in League Cup [16] . In an average championship, Shay missed 1.33 goals per game [40] .
Manchester City
On February 1, 2009, Shay Given officially became a Manchester City player, signing a contract for 4.5 years [41] . His official presentation as a player of the “townspeople” was held on February 5, and he was enrolled in the team at number 37. At a press conference, head coach of the City Mark Hughes said:
| “For a long time I said that we need an experienced goalkeeper like the Neck. I am pleased that we were able to get such a cool player who is so highly regarded in the Premier League. We have gained a very good goalkeeper with great experience. He will help the development of our young Joe Hart and Casper Schmeichel [36] . ” |
Given criticized the leadership of Newcastle, which in his opinion did not put enough effort to leave him in the club [42] . In his debut mast for City on February 7 against Middlesbrough , Shay left his goal intact, and his team won 1-0 [43] . On October 5, 2009, in a match against Aston Villa, Shay Given took the 400th time in the Premier League [44] . On December 5, 2009, in a match against Chelsea , Shay repelled a penalty by Frank Lampard , which helped his team win 2-1 [45] . In December 2009, after the captain of the “blue” Kolo Touré left to play for the national team , Given was entrusted with a captain's armband, and Roberto Mancini , the new head coach of the team, named Neck one of the five best goalkeepers in the world [46] . On April 24, 2010, in a match against Arsenal, Given dislocated his shoulder and was eliminated before the end of the season [47] . Due to the injury of the main goalkeeper, Manchester City was forced to urgently return the second goalkeeper Joe Hart from the lease.
By the beginning of the new season, Given recovered from injury, but in the first round in a match against Tottenham Hotspur Hart came out in the starting lineup. After that, Mancini finally gave preference to the English goalkeeper, and Given firmly settled on the bench. Then Given began to declare that he wants a game practice and does not mind if he will be leased [48] . In August 2010, information appeared that Given could go to Fulham to replace Mark Schwarzer , who planned to move to Arsenal, but in the end Shey remained in Manchester [49] . In January 2011, Given stated that he was ready to go even to the Championship , if only to have a game practice [50] [51] . In February, Shay lost the chance to challenge a place in the first team, having suffered a shoulder injury in training [52] .
Aston Villa
At the end of the 2010/11 season and before the start of the next season , Aston Villa head coach Gerard Houlier announced his interest in Given in connection with the search for a replacement for veteran goalkeeper Brad Friedel [53] . The main trump card in the fight for Given for the leadership of the "Villa" was the opportunity to guarantee the Irishman a permanent place in the main team. On July 18, 2011, Shay Given signed a 5-year contract with Aston Villa, which paid about 3.5 million pounds for it [54] [55] . On August 13, Given made his debut for Aston Villa as part of the English Premier League in a match against Fulham (0-0) and left his gate locked. [56] In September 2011, Terry Jenno , who worked with Given in Blackburn and Newcastle, became Aston Villa's goalkeeper coach. [57] On December 3, in a game against Manchester United , Shay got a hamstring injury and was forced to leave the field before the break. Given's recovery took about a month [58] . After returning to duty, Shay again took a place at the gates of the team. In February 2012, before a guest match with Newcastle United, Shey said that he did not regret his departure from the team:
| “After I left Newcastle, I did not play here, so this is somewhat unusual and emotional for me. At some point, I thought that until the end of my career I would play for Newcastle. But things are changing, so are you. I do not regret that I left Newcastle - nor do I regret a single moment during my stay here ” [59] . |
The match ended in defeat of Aston Villa with a score of 1: 2 [60] . In the debut season for Aston Villa, Given spent 32 matches in the championship, and his team took only 16th place.
The defeat of Everton and West Ham at the beginning of the 2012/13 season led to the new team coach Paul Lambert , who replaced Alex McLeish, began to trust the place in the first team Brad Guzan .
After returning from a lease to Middlesbrough in the 2014/15 season, Shay played 3 games in the Premier League and defended his goal in FA Cup matches. “Aston Villa” for the first time since 2000 managed to break into the FA Cup final, however, in the final match against Arsenal, Given conceded 4 goals with his own goal, and his team lost 0: 4 [61] .
Middlesbrough
On November 28, 2013, Shay Given, who had no gaming practice, was leased by the Middlesbrough Championship Club. The club management was forced to urgently seek a replacement for the main goalkeeper Jason Steele , who was injured [62] . In a debut match against Bolton , Shay helped him win a dry victory for his new club. In subsequent matches, Given also showed a confident game [63] . On December 31, 2013, Given's lease was extended until February 28, 2014 [64] . In the January transfer window , the Middlesbrough management tried to negotiate with Villa to extend the lease of the Irish goalkeeper until the end of the season, but the parties failed to reach an agreement, which Shay himself was disappointed with [65] . As a result, after playing with Leeds United [66] , having spent a total of 16 matches and recorded in his assets 10 matches “to zero”, Given left Riverside .
Stoke City
On July 10, 2015, Given signed a two-year contract with the English Premier League club Stoke City [67] . In the new club, he became the reserve goalkeeper and the replacement of the main goalkeeper Jack Butland . Shay made his debut for the new club on August 25, 2015 in the League Cup match against Luton Town (1: 1), which ultimately ended in a “potters” penalty kick [68] .
International Career
Although Given was not the main goalkeeper at Blackburn, his successful play at Swindon Town and Sunderland led to his challenge to the Irish national team in 1996. Shay made his debut for the national team on March 27, 1996 in a friendly game against the Russian team [69] . Given was the main goalkeeper of the Irish national team during the 1998 World Cup qualifiers and played in the qualifying campaign for Euro 2000 . The “guys in green” did not manage to break into these tournaments, however, in the qualifying round of the 2002 World Cup, the Irish were able to succeed by passing the Iranian team in the butt matches and reaching the final part of the championship. At the World Championship, Given participated in all the matches of his team. In the group round, Shay played against Cameroon (1: 1) [70] , Germany (1: 1) [71] and Saudi Arabia (3: 0) [72] and helped his team leave the group [73] . In the 1/8 finals, the Irish met with the Spanish national team (1: 1), which they lost in the penalty shootout - 2: 3 [74] .
Given was the main goalkeeper of the national team in the selection for the 2006 World Cup , but a draw in the match with Switzerland did not allow the Irish team to continue the fight for reaching the world championship. March 28, 2007 Given played his 80th match for the national team against Slovakia , and October 14, 2009 Given played his 100th match against Montenegro as part of the 2010 World Cup qualifier . Shay participated in butt games with the French team for the right to participate in the World Cup in South Africa , one of which ended in a scandal caused by the controversial decision of the referee of the meeting Martin Hansson . The Swedish referee scored the goal of William Gallas at Given's goal, after Gallas received a pass from Thierry Henry [75] .
Given was the main goalkeeper of the national team during the qualifying campaign for the European Championship 2012 , which ended in success for the Irish [76] , having spent more than 120 matches for the national team by this time [77] . At the European Championship, Given played in all matches of the group round: against Croatia (1: 3) [78] , Spain (0: 4) [79] and Italy (0: 2) [80] . However, all the matches were lost and the Irish finished the tournament. After Euro 2012, Given announced his departure from the national team [81] . Shay sent bonuses for games in the national team to charity [82] . In September 2014 he returned to the national team.
Personal life
Family
Shay Given was married to a girl named Jane Cunningham, whom he married in 2001. [83] Given is a Catholic, and on the occasion of his marriage received a blessing from His Holiness Pope John Paul II , who in his youth was an amateur goalkeeper. Given's family has two children: a boy Shane , born in 2004, and a girl, Sienna , born in 2007 [84] . June 17, 2014 the couple divorced.
In August 2015, it became known that Shay and his girlfriend Becky Gibson were expecting the birth of a child [85] . In December 2015, the daughter of Gracie was born to Neck [86] . The couple reported that they were expecting a second child in 2017 [87] : Casey's daughter was born on May 21 [88] .
Charity and Promotions
Given is regularly involved in charity events and aid gatherings for children with cancer. Since mother Neck died of cancer when he was 5 years old, this topic is close and understandable to him [89] .
Shay was shocked by the suicide of former teammate Gary Speed in November 2011. On November 27, 2011, before the match between Aston Villa and Swansea City , during a minute of silence dedicated to the memory of Speed, Shay cried right in front of the cameras [90] [91] .
Other sports
Given, even though he started his career in traditional football, participated in matches and Gaelic football , playing for the team “Namo Padrig Leifear” ( Irl. Namoh Padraig Leifear ) in the position of midfielder, not goalkeeper. According to his recollections, together with his brothers Liam and Kieran, he participated in a guest game against the Glensville club, during which a mass brawl ensued with the participation of players and even fans, and Given's team barely managed to leave the stadium and get to the club bus. Outraged by the reception, the players even publicly took off their underpants and turned their backs to the windows of the bus, showing the fans their buttocks [92] .
In 2014, Given participated in the training camp of the Donegal County team and was shocked by the load on the training, saying that in physical training this team, considered amateur in status, surpasses almost all the clubs in the English Premier League [93] .
Game Features
Goven goalkeeper's strengths include excellent reaction, jumping ability and good play on the goal line. In addition, Shay plays well at the exits and supervises the defense perfectly. One of the main gaming qualities of Given is its concentration. A constant concentration of attention was formed at the Neck during the game for Newcastle United (the middleweight of the Premier League ), since almost every match at the gate of the Neck had dangerous moments [5] .
