The white island is located in the Kara Sea , separated by the Malygin Strait from the Yamal Peninsula . It is part of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug .

There is no permanent population, since 1933 there is a polar weather station named after M.V. Popova. [one]
Geography
Area 1900 km ², height up to 12 m. The surface is covered with tundra vegetation. There are many thermokarst lakes on the island. It is separated from the Yamal Peninsula by the Malygin Strait , which is 9 km wide at its narrowest point.
The surface is flat, gradually descending to the south [2] . The north and east coasts are low, sandy, and cliffs up to 6 m high are sometimes found on the west and south coasts.
History
On August 12-13, 1944, an Arctic convoy BD-5 was sunk by a German submarine 60 miles from the island.
