Walter first appears in royal letters back in 1211 - 1214 . In 1220 he accompanied King Alexander II of Scotland during his visit to York . He is referred to as Lord Badenoch in 1229 , after his father defeated the MakUilliams. About 1230, like his father, Walter married the heiress of the county of Isabella, Countess Mentate , daughter of Muredach II the Younger , 3rd Earl of Mentate. By 1234, Isabella inherited this county, and so Walter became Earl of Mentate or Earl of Mentate as his wife ( jure uxoris ). He had at least one child, a son named Henry, as evidenced by the letter of Malcolm, Earl of Lennox, from 1250

Walter was one of the main political figures in Scotland , especially during the infancy of King Alexander III , when, together with Alan Dorward, he actually brought the country to a deplorable state. He died suddenly - either in October or November 1258. In England it was announced that the cause of his death was a fall from a horse, but in Scotland there was a rumor that Count Isabella's wife poisoned him, wanting to marry an English baron named Russell . By this time, his son Henry was already dead. Isabella remained a countess until 1260/1261, when Walter Stewart , the husband of Isabella's sister, Mary, captured her county. Since Walter had no male heirs, the lordship of Badenoch passed on to his nephew John. But John Mentate could not inherit.
