Story
An elderly stranger named Leland Gaunt arrives in the small and quiet town of Castle Rock , and opens a store under the strange name Necessary things . Every resident of the city finds in the store what he needs. At the same time, Gaunt does not ask for big money for things, but accepts the amount that the buyer can provide. However, the buyer also concludes something like a deal with Gaunt, and agrees to perform a “little prank” - to play one of the inhabitants of the town.
Gont's first buyer is Brian Rusk, a boy who purchases a rare autographed baseball card in a store. In exchange, Gaunt asks Brian to stain Wilma Yorzhik's laundry, which is dried in the yard, with dirt. Another buyer, the humble woman Netty Cobb, purchases a porcelain figurine from Gaunt, very similar to the one that she had in the past and which her husband broke. In exchange, Netty hangs out denouncing leaflets signed in the name of Assistant Sheriff Norris Ridgwick in the mayor's house of Danforth Keaton.
At this time, Netty discovers her beloved dog, which Wilma Yorzhik, who had been murdered, had very unflattering earlier. Suspicion falls on Wilma. Wilma, on the other hand, finds his laundry soiled in mud, and the glass in the house is broken, and Netty falls into suspicion, although Brian Rusk made both of them in exchange for a card. Women face each other in a knife fight.
Denfort Keaton, having found penal leaflets at home, suspects an assistant to the sheriff, who often clashed with him. The assistant receives a gift in which there is a mousetrap, which, in his opinion, the mayor planted. As a result, a conflict is growing between them. In the same way, religious figures of the city, Catholics and Baptists quarreled among themselves.
As a result, almost every resident of Castle Rock made a purchase at Gaunt's store, and, accordingly, made that very “prank” to someone else so that the suspicion fell on a certain person. At the same time, none of the residents suspects that Gaunt is plotting, except for the sheriff Alan Pangborn, who did not buy anything from Gaunt, because he could not visit his store because of business.
As a result, relations between residents of the city reach a peak point of tension, and the city is gradually plunging into the abyss of chaos and hatred. And Gaunt already provides residents with firearms to quickly solve the problems.
