Since 1986, by the decision of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences, he was appointed head of the Nikolaev branch of the GAO ; since 1992, G. I. Pinigin is the director of the Nikolaev Astronomical Observatory , which has been a research institute since 2002 .
The main scientific activity of G.I. Pinigin is related to the study of optimal structures and the creation of new meridian telescopes for ground-based coordinates of celestial objects . For his success in the field of astronomical instrument engineering, G. I. Pinigin was awarded the silver medal of the Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy (VDNH) of the USSR ( 1974 ).
In 1995, a new automatic telescope designed by G. I. Pinigin (together with co-authors) was created in the Nenets Autonomous Okrug - the Axial Meridian Circle (AMK) [1] , which in 2001 was included in the list of objects of the national heritage of Ukraine [2] [3] [4] .
Under the leadership of G.I. Pinigin, international cooperation with astronomical observatories in Russia , France , Turkey and the PRC has developed widely in the NAO to clarify the relationship between the radio and optical reference coordinate systems, create a high-precision consolidated catalog in selected sites of the celestial sphere , according to observations and mass determinations selected asteroids .
G.I. Pinigin conducts active pedagogical work, giving lectures to students of higher educational institutions of Nikolaev and St. Petersburg . He is the author of more than 300 scientific publications. G.I. Pinigin has been a member of the International Astronomical Union since 1979, and has been the head of the Scientific Council of the Nikolaev Astronomical Observatory since 1992 .
